Q: What’s your comment on the result of the election in the Taiwan region?

A: The outcomes of Taiwan leadership and legislature elections reveal that the Democratic Progressive Party cannot represent the mainstream public opinion on the island. Taiwan is China's Taiwan, the elections will not change the basic landscape and development trend of cross-Strait relations, will not alter the shared aspiration of compatriots across the Taiwan Strait to forge closer ties, and will not impede the inevitable trend of China's reunification.

The Taiwan question is China’s internal affair. Whatever changes take place in Taiwan, the basic fact that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China will not change; the Chinese government’s position of upholding the one-China principle and opposing “Taiwan independence” separatism, “two Chinas” and “one China, one Taiwan” will not change; and the international community’s prevailing consensus on upholding the one-China principle and long-standing and overwhelming adherence to this principle will not change. The one-China principle is the solid anchor for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. We believe that the international community will continue to adhere to the one-China principle, and understand and support the Chinese people’s just cause of opposing “Taiwan independence” separatist activities and striving to achieve national reunification.

QHow do you view the positioning of the Chinese mainland and Taiwan? What is the one-China principle and what is China’s position on the Taiwan question?

AThere is only one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China.

Chinese people living on both sides of the Taiwan Straits share the same roots, culture, and ethnic identity. We are members of the same family, sharing ties of blood, A common national and cultural identity is an innate gene that cannot be changed by anyone or by any force. In July 1894, Japan launched a war of aggression against China. In April 1895, the defeated Qing government was forced to cede Taiwan and the Penghu Islands to Japan. The Cairo Declaration issued by China, the United States and the United Kingdom on December 1, 1943 stated that it was the purpose of the three allies that all the territories Japan had stolen from China, such as Northeast China, Taiwan and the Penghu Islands, should be restored to China.  The Potsdam Proclamation was signed by China, the United States and the United Kingdom on July 26, 1945, and subsequently recognized by the Soviet Union. It reiterated: "The terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out." In September of the same year, Japan signed the instrument of surrender, in which it promised that it would faithfully fulfill the obligations laid down in the Potsdam Proclamation. On October 25 the Chinese government announced that it was resuming the exercise of sovereignty over Taiwan, and the ceremony to accept Japan's surrender in Taiwan Province of the China war theater of the Allied powers was held in Taibei. From that point forward, China had recovered Taiwan de jure and de facto through a host of documents with international legal effect.

Although the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have yet to be reunified, but the sovereignty and territory of China has never been split and the fact that the mainland and Taiwan belong to one and same China has never changed. The one-China principle represents the political foundation of cross-Strait relations. The cross-Strait reunification is an overriding historical trend and the right course. we are willing to create broad space for peaceful reunification, but will leave no room for any form of separatist activities.

Q: As Chinese Mainland carries out various military exercises in the Taiwan Strait, some countries say that China is using force to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. What do you think of this?

A: what is the status quo on the Taiwan question? The facts are crystal clear, that is both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one and the same China and Taiwan is part of China’s territory. Despite being politically against each other for a long time, China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity have never been split. This is the real status quo of the situation in the Taiwan Strait, which has not changed since ancient times and will not change. China must be reunified and will be reunified. This is Taiwan's future.

Who is trying to change this status quo? What is their purpose? I believe everyone can see it very clearly. Whoever continues to promote “incremental independence”, pushing for “de-sinicization”, and seeking to create the false impression of “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan” in the world is changing the status quo.

who is trying to change this status quo? Certainly not the mainland, but the “Taiwan independence” separatists who have been promoting “incremental independence”, pushing for “de-sinicization”, and seeking to create the false impression of “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan”,

Q:Some countries claim that China is trying to accelerate the reunification of Taiwan by force. What do you think of this?

A:Resolving the Taiwan question and realizing China's complete reunification is a historic mission of the Communist Party of China. It is indispensable for the realization of China's rejuvenation. It is also shared aspiration of 1.4 billion Chinese People. China must and will be reunified, it’s a historical trend that cannot be changed. National reunification by peaceful means is the first choice of the CPC and the Chinese government in resolving the Taiwan question, as it best serves the interests of the Chinese nation as a whole, including our compatriots in Taiwan, and it works best for the long-term stability and development of China. We upholding the Basic Principles of Peaceful Reunification and One Country, Two Systems. Once peaceful reunification is achieved under One Country, Two Systems, it will lay new foundations for China to make further progress and achieve national rejuvenation. At the same time, it will create huge opportunities for social and economic development in Taiwan and bring tangible benefits to the people of Taiwan.

But there are always some people, who misinterpret China’s principles and policies for resolving the Taiwan question and achieving national reunification, constantly hyped up the “China military threat” narrative and “The schedule of forced reunification”. They are in fact creating excuses for their efforts of arms expansion, maintaining military hegemony and sabotaging regional peace and stability and finding ways to support "Taiwan independence" and use Taiwan to contain China. Incited and driven by such fallacies, the "Taiwan independence" forces have become more rampant, going further and further down the road of "Taiwan independence" and running counter to peaceful reunification. Taiwan is a part of China. In accordance with the principle of national sovereignty, China has the right to take various measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, including the use of force to combat separatist forces and complete national reunification.

Q: Some people compare Taiwan with Ukraine and worry that Chinese Mainland will take actions against Taiwan like Russia did against Ukraine. What do you think about this?

A: The Ukraine issue is different in nature and are not comparable at all. Most fundamentally, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the Taiwan question is entirely China’s internal affair. The Ukraine issue arose from contention between two countries,Some people, while being vocal about the principle of sovereignty on the Ukraine issue, have kept undermining China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity on the Taiwan question. This is a blatant act of double standards.

Some people have ulterior motives in linking the Taiwan question with the Ukraine crisis and intend to misrepresent facts, latch on to and exploit the Ukraine crisis to their advantage, attract the attention of the international community, and advocate for and support "Taiwan independence."
